The results surprised everyone. Poll predictions were the exact opposite of what actually happened. Political analysts, senior journalists, and the public did not see this coming.

This time, both my wife and I voted for the DMK, just like we did in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. You could call us TEAM-Udhay-Anna. We are both salaried employees, and our 10-year-old son is autistic. Meanwhile, our maid and her family voted for TVK, even though she received Kalaingar Magalir Urimai Thogai (KMUT) benefits during the DMK government. From what I see, domestic workers’ families chose TVK, while salaried workers voted differently.

This isn’t just about class differences. It’s more about who is informed and who isn’t. I call this pattern the “Visibility Gap” or the “Seen Versus Unseen Effect.”

People only judge what they can see.

  • The top level sees future opportunities.

  • The middle level sees political warfare.

  • The bottom level sees grocery prices, jobs, roads, electricity, and safety.

People don’t notice the benefits at the top, but they clearly see the costs right now. This is similar to the economic concept known as the "seen versus unseen" effect.

1. The Visibility Gap / Seen Versus Unseen Effect

If you look at the top performers from M.K. Stalin’s 2021-2026 term, you’d include Mr. T.R.B Rajaa, Mr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Mr. Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, and Mr. Thangam Thenarasu. Udhya Anna and others also did well. Still, even though our best leaders made it to the top, we didn’t manage to share that success with people at the grassroots.

1.1 We won at Davos but failed at the districts.

My cook-akka said, “She has no idea who TRB Rajaa is”.

I work as a Product Owner in Corporate Marketing at an IT firm in Siruseri and have nearly 20 years of experience. I’ve built content management systems for clients in the US and Australia. When I started this role, I learned how important the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, is.

Companies across the globe meet to discuss evolving global challenges, seek cooperation, and identify strategies that could lead to business partnerships and investments that benefit both partners in the long run. It’s not easy to promote Tamil Nadu on a global stage. You have to highlight its technical capabilities, robust infrastructure, global connections, success stories, growth, and high returns.

This is an ambitious long-term plan. It is an example of DMK's futuristic thinking. But sadly, it did not resonate with the local hubs. The same goes with each top performer. My wife and I understood the importance of Davos, but what about my cook-akka and the maid’s family? You got 2 of our votes, but not the other 6: cook-akka and her husband (2), maid and co (4). We did not fail; we have a blind spot.

1.2 We have a blind spot.

A Strategic Horizon Syndrome: This means leaders focus on long-term plans, while people at the grassroots judge success by what they experience right now. This gap leads to misunderstandings, dissatisfaction, and political friction, even if the future benefits could be good.

From an academic perspective, we can call it “The Time Horizon mismatch.”

  • Leadership thinks in decades.

  • Mid-level leadership thinks in election cycles.

  • Grassroots think in weeks and months.

People at the grassroots didn’t see the long-term benefits and started to pull away. When another option came up, they chose it. We missed this silent disconnect.

1.3 The Silent Disconnect

Think of a three-stage rocket that starts off strong, with everyone cheering at mission control. Suddenly, the third stage disconnects too early, before reaching space. The result is shock and disbelief.

This is what happened with the third tier of voters: they quietly disconnected from the DMK, and no one noticed.

This was a mistake we all made, and it cost us a lot.

1.4 How do we tackle the blind spot

We need to show immediate on-the-ground improvements for the grassroots, monthly or quarterly results for the second tier, and yearly results for the top tier.

1.62 crore women only saw long-term benefits, not immediate or yearly ones. Some say even 1.31 crore women voted for TVK because their children influenced them. But if we look at it logically, focusing on the 1.62 crore women in the middle and top tiers could have helped us win.

I would try it this way: Any scheme should have 3 touchpoints.

  • Show an immediate, single-layer benefit; aim for all tiers.

  • Show progressive results; aim for the middle tier.

    • Don’t wait to complete fully; plan for an iterative use. (Agile delivery)

  • Showcase completed projects for investors.

When a scheme is finished, it should be used to attract new investors. Showing progress helps people see the benefits sooner. Immediate results give people hope, help them trust DMK, and build confidence.

2. The Wrong Enemy

History: A strong empire can lose its center through neglect rather than military defeat.

From the pages of ancient history,

  • Fall of Babylon (539 BCE)

  • The Peloponnesian War (404 BCE)

  • Siege of Baghdad (1258)

  • Fall of Constantinople (1453)

  • Fall of Tenochtitlan (1521)

History shows that many powerful states lost their core because they focused too much on outside campaigns and left their own centers weak. People often think, "No one would attack us now," but history sends a receipt.

Fall of Babylon: When the Neo-Babylonian Empire was still powerful, King Nabonidus spent years away from Babylon, neglecting political support in the capital. Cyrus the Great invaded it, which fell with surprisingly little resistance. DMK never considered the 2026 Tamil Nadu election winner, TVK, a contender, nor did it see it as a match in the 6 months leading up to the election.

For 4.5 years, we chose Gov. Ravi as our opponent. From the Tamil anthem issue to the deliberate non-signing of the new bills, the vice-chancellors' appointees, and much more, our efforts and focus were on him. In fact, we drained our think tank, rhetoric, prime-time debates, articles, and memes on Mr. Ravi for 54 months.

DMK’s rhetoric and efforts during the election campaign were still focused on Ravi’s advisors in the North, while there was little against TVK. Even if DMK had repositioned itself again during the campaign, the burnt-out overlords would not have had enough fuel to repeat the 4.5-year rhetoric against TVK.

Any battle is won between arch-rivals or enemies. Positioning and targeting the right enemy early in the battle would have made a difference. This was a major strategic miscalculation by DMK.

Losing Chennai to TVK is like The Great Alexander losing Athens to a nomadic tribe near Mars Hill.

3. The horses are not teamed properly

In the Ben-Hur (1959) movie, when Balthazar introduces Ben-Hur to Sheik Ilderim. Ben-Hur, himself a horse chariot driver, watches Sheik’s men practicing the horse chariot for the upcoming race against the mighty Romans. Ben-Hur notices that the horses are not properly teamed and expresses his view to the Sheik.

DMK is famous for its sharp, witty speakers at public rallies. There are many skilled members, but they are working in different areas. The exceptionally skilled leaders are focused on Delhi and national issues, while state-level leaders aren’t getting noticed. Some blame DMK for not being active on social media, but even there, you need to communicate. Telling stories is now more important than just giving speeches. Narration is the new Oration.

DMK rhetoric must be academic, pun-intended, scientific, millennial, Gen-Z, Gen-Alpha centric. Bring Mr. A. Raja, Ms. KaniMozhli, Mr. Dhayanidi Maran, and Mr. Trichy Siva to the state level. Train others to handle the center.

DMK needs to reconnect with people, and words are key to building that connection. While the best-performing ministers, such as TRB.R, PTR, and AMP, continue to focus on their work, others who are good at communicating should explain it to the public.

PERFORM - PREACH - PRACTISE.

  • PERFORM - Best performing ministers.

  • PREACH - People connectors.

  • PRACTISE - Train the next generation.

4. The by-runner missed reading the pitch.

Sachin (by-runner) at the bowler’s would watch the bowler’s hand to see which side is the shining side and would place his bat on his left if the bowler is trying for an outswing or to his right if it's an in-swing. Thereby informing the batsman Rahul Dravid what the bowler is aiming for. With this information, Rahul would hit a couple of boundaries and a couple of sixes.

DMK needs to develop a strong on-the-ground by-runner to relay the current mood. Failing to capture this has severely undermined the election victory.

A new strategy/wing needs to be built here. (scope to grow)

Watch here, Sachin explaining it on YouTube.

5. Sprint Retrospect

5.1 What went well?
  • I won’t go into too much detail here. The government’s 4.5-year track record is clear. So, let’s focus on what didn’t work and what should be done next.

5.2 What did not go well?
  • Old-timers have maxed out, DMK cannot build bridges using old folks anymore. There is no point in the blame game for this loss.

  • Working at the grassroots today isn’t the same as it was in the 70s, 80s, or 90s.

  • No Tamil Nadu youth is willing to work in hotels, mansions, or side-ways shops. Those jobs have moved to low-wage North Indian youth. How can the DMK expect today’s youth to work door-to-door?

  • That’s why we completely missed reaching people at the grassroots.

  • The prime-time debate did not reach Gen Z and first-time voters.

  • DMK-affiliated TV channels should improve this.

  • Many people say DMK should use social media more actively. When it started, DMK was strong in speeches, writing, plays, and acting. Social media is mostly a one-way drive, where people just share their own views. But real dialogue (two-way drive) is important, and prime-time debates are better for that.

  • Have a separate prime-time debate each day for young people.

  • Use Dindugul Leoni, Imman Anachi, Gopinath, Advocate Prasanna, and James Vasanth to anchor the youth prime-time debate. There could be others, but I will leave that to the interpreters.

5.3 What should we stop doing?
  • No more different symbols.

  • If a coalition is needed before the election, stop allowing contestants to contest with their own party's symbol.

  • Only Rising Sun should be allowed. This stops horse trading and backstabbing.

  • Stop targeted, harmful rhetoric against any opposition figure.

  • For example, in the case of Senthil Balaji, the DMK highlighted how bad he was while serving as a minister in the ADMK. The cadres also started voicing it, but when he joined the DMK, they were left looking foolish. The right rebuttal or explanation did not sit well with the public and the cadres.

  • In politics, only circumstances decide who moves where and how. This is an expected norm; DMK people connectors should educate their cadre about this. Rather than targeting the individual, target the opposition as a whole. You cannot call the center a washing machine, while you do have one in your backyard.

  • No Prop Up (முட்டுக்குடுக்க கூடாது)

  • If you made a mistake, accept and plan for course correction.

5.4 What should we start doing?
  • How can the DMK expect today’s youth to work door-to-door?

  • Young people today are stronger when they work in groups rather than alone. That’s why they use social media to connect with others who share their views.

  • Organize local meet-ups and small gatherings for young people and married couples. These events should be fun, engaging, and focus on why Dravidam is important. Invest in event organizers, since this is the new way to bring people together. Even weddings now have event coordinators to make them memorable.

  • Aim to contest fully, It would be better if DMK could compete in all 234 sections; its chances of winning would be high.

  • Have a diverse group of ministers, have a diverse representation in the cabinet.

  • Tackle anti-incumbency;

    • Rotation is a must.

    • The maximum tenure a party person can serve in any position is 20 years. i.e., 4 elections (not necessarily continuous).

  • Practical guideline (reasonable):

    • 0-5 years, ideal for growth and learning.

    • 5-10 years, good for deep, focused reform or building a track record.

    • 10-20 years is often the optimal span for sustained influence and institutional change.

    • Beyond 20 years, continued impact is possible but requires active renewal, clear accountability, and demonstrable results to justify continued service as high performers and leaders.

  • First-time voters want to see new faces leading them. Most people chose new leaders this time.

6. Read the room

Mr. MK. Stalin waited nearly 70 years to become Chief Minister and bring change. But today’s millennials won’t wait that long; they might wait 30 years. Gen Z won’t even wait 30 years; they might wait 15.

Young people today are used to getting content, answers, and results instantly. They aren’t willing to wait for a long, drawn-out process. Be bold, be strong, and be fast.

6.1 One liner about this failure:

Everyone wants a promotion, but no one wants to do the basic desk jobs anymore.

Everyone wants to be like Obama, but no one wants to do the behind-the-scenes work that Bill Ackman does.

Many of today’s DMK leaders are now millionaires. It’s time for them to move behind the scenes. They should set up an investment arm and manage things from there. Don’t try to be both the minister and the main decision-maker. Let decision-makers work behind the scenes and let others take action at the front.

  • BTS should plan for the present and share the action items with the front-runners.

  • BTS should evaluate the front-runners' performance with the help of the by-runners.

  • BTS should plan for the future and start investing for the long term.

6.2 Start with this immediately:
  • All 35 seats the DMK won by a few thousand should see the margin move into the tens of thousands.

7. Conclusion

This is how I see DMK’s performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections. There have been many issues, like cadres upset about Congress leaving and other parties sidelining TVK, but I didn’t focus on those here. I wrote this because I felt like a hardworking student who lost out at the final moment.

  • It's a battle between families with strong cultural ties and families with strained relationships.

  • It's a battle between people who take responsibility and those who distance themselves from responsibility.

  • It’s a battle between people who inspect themselves and those who blame others.

  • It’s a battle of ideology vs. the battle of idealessness.

  • It's a battle of postmodern realism (life) vs. the postmortem reels (death).

  • We commission collectiveness, but they run to collect commissions.

  • We speak facts; while they speak fictions.

  • The globe watched that we didn’t need to lock our MLAs, while they locked theirs in GLOBE locks.

  • We have a legacy, a lineage; a documentary, all they have is an unreleasable movie.
